Ammonia Cracker:
This method involves cracking ammonia gas with ammonia cracker
units. Raw ammonia gas stored in a cylinder is passed through a nickel
catalyst at a high temperature. Ammonia gas cracks at approximately 850
deg. C to 900 deg. C on a nickel catalyst. When this happens, ammonia
dissociates into nitrogen and hydrogen. We also use PSA molecular sieves
to ensure the production of pure hydrogen. The hydrogen produced is
99.999% pure.
Approximately 100 ppm of uncracked ammonia is present even in the
cracked gas, with a dew point of -(30) degrees. Gas purification units
are installed to obtain a dew point of -(70) degrees. This also helps in
removing uncracked ammonia gas. The cost of hydrogen that is generated
in these plants is very nominal (around Rs. 4.00 per cubic meter).
